Green Cleaners… Why?

I’m fortunate to be able to share a little bit about “why” to switch to green cleaners, and how easy it is, for both residential and small businesses.

Ok, I know what you might be saying, Green Cleaners? Can you really cover this in a blog post, and not put me to sleep?

Follow me to find out…

Who Am I

First, let me introduce myself, I’m Robin Forster with FeelSoAlive.

I want to start our discussion by sharing these 2 examples with you:

First example: Did you know that babies are being born pre-polluted? They have found over 232 synthetic chemicals in cord blood! Including BPA (Bisphenol A) which is in plastics, food containers, etc., and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) – which comes from computer circuit boards, synthetic fragrances and is often used in personal products and detergents.

Did you know that BPA has possible health effects on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland of fetuses, infants, and children? There is also a possible link between BPA and increased blood pressure, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Let’s look at more about chemicals and our environment with a short video from the Story of Stuff Project:

The Story of Cosmetics

Second Example: Dr. Doris Rapp, in her book “Is This Your Child’s World?” shares the story of Liza who is doing her homework – writing a story about a boot.

.
Did you notice that her handwriting is deteriorating? Wondering why?

She is being exposed to a minute amounts of chlorine bleach fumes that are wafted up to her room from the basement laundry.

Wow!

Conventional Cleaners:

Let’s look at Conventional Glass cleaners – they may have Ammonia in them – which can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory system! I don’t know about your house, but we have kitty nose prints on our windows. I don’t want our kitty getting sick from the window cleaner!

Many multi-purpose cleaners may cause asthma/respiratory problems, Skin Allergies & Irritation or Developmental & Reproductive problems, and perhaps cancer. [Some of the ingredients are: glycol ethers, sodium lauryl sulfate and propylene glycol butyl ethers].

You know, when the warning label on the product, says “to keep out of reach of children” do we really want to have it in our home where we are all trying to breath? Where children and animals may be on the floor?

We know that the average household, generates approximately 25 pounds of toxic, hazardous waste each year. Guess what? Convention cleaners are considered “hazardous waste.” To dispose of them, in our local area (Eugene, Lane County, OR.), we need to contact Lane County Hazardous Waste for an appointment to dispose of these products we are using in our homes! Call 541.682.4120. Click here for the Lane County web site.

Isn’t it frustrating to find out that products, we were raised on, that we thought were safe, aren’t. That they may have been exposing our families to health problems!

Ok, maybe frustrated is an understatement?

You may not know this, but I’m a label reader, a Master Recycler and love going down rabbit holes researching things like, what is this chemical in this product, and what does it do?

I was a Hippie

Back in the day, when I was starting my family, I was a hippie and lived in the country. We were on well water, and a septic tank. We lived near a lake. I wanted my babies safe and to protect the environment at the same time. Which was a challenge back then.

I was fortunate to find a company whose values lined up with mine!

Enjoy this quick little video on how I found out about Shaklee.

.

“GoTo” Company

My go to company for the past 30 + years has been Shaklee.
Dr. Shaklee believed in creating “products in harmony with nature” a novel concept in 1956, the beginning of the “better living through chemistry” era.

in 1960 Dr. Shaklee created my all-time favorite product, a non-toxic, multi-purpose bio-degradable cleaner, that actually works!

Basic H was born! It has over 1001 +_ uses!

I have used Basic H2 on: floors, doors, windows, cars, dogs, kids, bikes, squeaky wheels, plants, getting gum out of hair, and anything that needs cleaning!

By switching to Basic H2 you can keep potentially over 5,000 bottles out of the land fill! Because Basic H2 will replace over 5,000 bottles of ready to use window cleaner! Wow!

How you ask? Because we use 2 drops of Basic H2, 16 oz of our own water, to create 16 oz of window cleaner, for about .02 cents!

Budget Friendly, environmentally awesome, and low carbon foot print!

Plus, the Shaklee Corporation was the first corporation in the world to go Climate Neutral – that was in 2000!

We hear so much about Green washing…

Basic H has been used by Jacque Cousteau on board their ships in 1987, was chosen as one of the first official Earth Day products in 1990, has been used in the White House and the Vice President’s residence beginning in 2008, is one of Oprah’s favorite things and partnered with of Dr. Wangari Maathai’s and her Green Belt movement the “A Million Trees program”.

The Shaklee Corp became a Charter Partner of the U.S. EPA’s Climate Wise Program – which set an aggressive corporate-wide greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Let’s talk about consumer power. We can choose to purchase products with a high, or a low carbon footprint, and either healthy for our families and the planet or not.

I have been using Shaklee for over 30 years – it’s so easy to switch. No more walking down that stinky detergent aisle at the store! No more wondering if this cleaner will really work, or if it will make my kids or animals sick.
