Dog health? Not with Parabens. Bet you didn’t know!

We have a dog, and a cat, and we are animal lovers.

Do you have animals in your home, or love animals?

We are always on the lookout for products that will help us, to help our pets.

I was recently at the first annual Eugene/Springfield 2013 Bark for Life, and learned about a new product for dogs. It’s a wipe that is designed to be used in dogs/cats ears and eyes. Hurrah!

Something quick and easy!

Since I’m a label reader, I took a picture of the label of the container and then, back at my desk, I started Googling the ingredients.

My enthusiasm started to wan, as I read the story behind the ingredients.

It has Parabens in it!

So what you ask?

According to LiveStrong.com (and other sources I checked) they “are synthetic preservatives used in foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal care products. They include methlparaben, ethlparaben, proplparaben and butylparaben.”  Parabens can mimic hormones in the body and disrupt functions of the endocrine system!  This can increase the risk of breast cancer and our body does not break down synthetic estrogen easily.  Many countries in the UK are or have banned ParaBens due to the increasing skepticism over there safety and concerns over the health risks.

Oh, great. We just put down one family dog (a heart wrenching experience) due to cancer – not so sure I want to use a product that has so many health risks when used by humans, that whole nations are outlawing the product!

Would you use a product like that?

Reading the site “ScienceNordic” I discovered an app  called “Hormone Check” which warns consumers if the product has potentially  hormone-disruptive chemicals in it. Alas, the app is in a Nordic language!  What a great idea for English speakers!

One site I looked at talked about how some Parabens, when exposed to UVB rays (sunshine) can cause the skin cells to die!  And, when eye drops contain methalparabens it can cause a degree of eye tissue damage, according to a study published in the April 2009 issue of the Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Hmmm, so this product that I looked at is to help keep your pet’s ears and eyes healthy… yet, we see that some of the ingredients in the product could be creating more health problems, than solving any hygiene problems.

Good grief! I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to use that product. It’s called  John Paul Pet Wipes.

Their web site talks about how their products are Parben and EDTA free. Actually, according to their web site, there are only two products that are Parben and EDTA free. The wipes are not one of them.

What is a pet owner to do?

I have a “go-to” company, whose products I have used for over 30 years.

As you can tell, I’m a label reader, I want to know what’s in the products I use on my animals, in my home and take as food supplements.

What do I use? I have been trusting Shaklee for the past 30 years.

A company who has been around for over 56 years, has a 100% Guarantee on every product, always, who’s philosophy has always been “products in harmony with nature” has fueled over 100 Olympic medals, well, I think they are good enough for me!

How about you?
