Did you know that about 80% of North Americans may be vitamin D deficient?

That’s about 44 million women and men in the U.S. are at risk for osteoporosis and other problems, according to Dr. Richard Brouse.

Have you ever wondered why Vitamin D is called the Sunshine Vitamin?

Did you know that humans, and almost all other animals can make vitamin D3 from cholesterol activation in the skin? Or on their fur or feathers by the action of solar UVB (sunshine) according to Dr. Brouse in his book “Build A Better You”.

We need sunshine on our skin to manufacture D3.

But wait, we are also wearing lots of sunscreen! How does that work?

When was the last time you were out in the Sunshine?

Do you live north of Atlanta, GA? There is a saying that if you live north of Atlanta, then you are probably deficient in Vitamin D!

Here is a quick little quiz (click here) to help you figure out if you are getting enough Vitamin D.

Have you been wondering about the differences between Vitamin D2 and D3?

The short version is that D2 is manufactured and accounts for nearly all the reports of human toxicity. D3 is now being classified as a pre-hormone. Did you know that you need solar UVB AND your liver cells AND your kidneys to create D3 in your body?

In 2009 the American Academy of Dermatology updated their position to advise people to supplement, after talking with their doctor, and  about how much supplemental vitamin D they may need.

Did you know that Vitamin D supports:

  • Bone health – breaks, osteoporosis
  • Dental health – periodontal disease
  • Immune system challenges
  • Auto-immune challenges – MS, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s
  • Infections,
  • Cancers – 17 different strains
  • Insulin resistance
  • Heart – heart disease, stroke, hypertension
  • SAD – seasonal mood disorder
  • Weight issues – if you are over weight it’s even more challenging to get enough D
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Chronic pain
  • Muscle wasting
  • Birth defects

Did you know that to utilize vitamin D properly we also need the following nutrients:

  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin K2
  • Boron
  • A tiny amount of vitamin A

And, as we age, we need more vitamin D, yet  the body becomes less efficient in converting vitamin D to a form it can use!

OK, the problem is clear, it’s hard to get enough Vitamin D in our bodies and we don’t function well without it!

We have seen the list of problems that D can have a positive impact on!

How to get enough D?

We can get some from fortified foods, and from  fish oil. Supplementation seems to be the only way to get enough vitamin D!

Which kind? D2 or D3?

D3 is the biologically optimal form – which means it’s better for our bodies!
