Did you read it? Chemicals or Healthy?

Hmm, did you read it?

Did you check it out?

Do you know what’s in it?

Those were my questions, when a friend was telling me about some awesome new mascara that she was just loving!

To be fair,  we had just been talking about doing less chemicals in our lives, trying to eat as organic as possible, and sharing notes on what others were doing to try to cut down their exposure to stuff that makes us sick.

My friend’s comment was about how thick and spectacular her lashes were. 🙂

And, of course we all admired her lashes, and then started talking about what was in the mascara and what it was made out of. Which led to questions about reading the ingredients.

I  shared with my friends my 4 step process for researching what sin stuff we use…

  1.  I read the label. I usually do it at my computer (most companies list their ingredients on line).
  2. Next, the words that I have no clue what they are, I copy and paste into a search engine – usually Google.
  3. After I have read what I found on Google, and if it makes sense, then I will go to the Environmental Working Group web site, to see how toxic the ingredient(s) are. http://www.ewg.org/ .    I also check their sister site Skin Deep the Cosmetics Database:  http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
    • Often Companies will have on-line what’s called the MSDS sheet. This is a form that the company files out, explaining how toxic, or not, their product is, and what to do if you get it in your eyes, or on your skin, or if it’s in the air, for example.
  4. All of this checking into the ingredients can take just a few minutes, or longer, depending on what the ingredient is, and how curious you are.  Finished researching, now, I have the information I need, to make an informed decision – to buy, or not to buy…

For my friends who are home schooling, this process opens up LOTs of  opportunities.

What is your process for checking out the kinds of everyday household products you spend your money on?

Are you new to label reading?

Are you seasoned veteran?

I would really enjoy hearing your thoughts and comments.
