4 Ways to Stay Healthy This Holiday Season

Yikes, with the Holidays almost here, it seems so inevitable  to come down with the cold, or flu, AND then gain an extra 5-10 pounds!

What about those gifts that stretch our holiday budgets – and then are re-gifted!

If any of this sounds familiar, then I think you will enjoy the 4 Ways to Stay Healthy this Holiday Season. 1. Creating healthier air, inside, 2. Enhancing our immune system, 3. Play, 4. Give the Gift of Health!

  1. Creating healthier air, inside. Aren’t we all spending more time indoors during the holidays? Did you know that the EPA found the air inside our homes is 2-5 times more polluted then the air outside our homes. Seriously.
Situation: Most conventional cleaning products are considered hazardous waste! Do you know what’s in your cleaner? I read the label of a popular blue window cleaner, went to their web site, goggled the ingredients, and the news was NOT good. Not only is it expensive, but one of the ingredients can damage your central nervous system! Another ingredient is flammable! This is just one product! How many products like this do you have under your sink?

Are you the person who, while cleaning the bathroom, needs to back out to get some fresh air?
Options: Yes, there are other options! There are products that help your inside environment, help the outside environment and help your budget!  Isn’t that a nice Win-Win? Need some help finding those products? Click here to see what we have been using for the last 30 years.

2. Enhancing our immune system. Does the stress of the day seem to build up? Do you stay up late? Get up early? Eat more sugar and fast foods? Not much exercise? If this sounds like you, there are a few things you can do, starting right now, to help enhance your immune system. Think prevention!

Situation:  “Sleep is overrated”. Have you heard that term? Have you perhaps used it yourself?  What happens if we don’t get enough sleep?

Our body temperatures can lower, our immune system becomes impaired, which it impacts our nervous system. We then find it hard to concentrate!  Plus, our moods can be a little crabby. Did you know that while we sleep our bodies (cells) are rebuilding and repairing damages from things like stress!

Food: What are we eating? During the Holidays it seems like foods with white sugar are everywhere, including in my hand! Did you know that 1 cup of white sugar has 744 calories, has 200 g of Carbohydrate and has over 199.8 g of Sugars! Where does white sugar come from? It is very processed sugar cane. They boil the sugar cane and drain off the liquid – which now has no nutrients in it. That’s what we are eating!

Options: How long will it take to burn off a cup of white sugar?  According to Livestrong.com: cha-cha (dancing) for 228 minutes, Walk: 4 mph (15 min/mil) for 13651 minutes or carrying groceries up stairs for 91 minutes! Why not grab an apple with a little healthy peanut butter for a quick snack BEFORE you will be exposed to a sugar laden food? What if we were exchanging sugary foods for our needed  3-5 servings of fruit and vegies a DAY!

  1. PLAY! Oops, Exercise. Did you know that exercise can boost your mood, improve your sex life and give you more energy? We all know that to win the battle of the bulge, exercise – moving our bodies – is ONE of the key ingredients. Did you know that exercise also boosts your high-density lipoprotein (good) cholesterol? We all want our blood to flow, yes? Click here to read more info on exercise from the Mayo Clinic.  Some of my favorite winter activities are outside including: snow shoeing, cross country skiing and running. My favorite indoor activities are: swimming and bike training.     Click here for Expert  Advice on snow sports by REI.
