Sun kissed beautiful summer skin today,

wrinkled prune looking skin by Fall!

Is there no other choice?

Yes, there is!

Did you know that the skin is our body’s largest organ? Our skin does amazing work! It acts as a barrier between our internal and external environments. Keeps the gross stuff out of our insides including, unfriendly bacteria and other toxic stuff!skin pic_understanding-skin_layers-of-the-skin_human-skinanatomy

Did you know that our skin also regulates our body temperature? And it’s an essential part of the immune system? Pretty amazing!

And, we want our skin to be awesome, and do its work, right?

What can we do to help our skin do its work?

sun burn kid_2015-06-25_13-28-35For our Children – childhood sunburns can cause Skin Cancer, and its largely preventable!

  1. From the Office on Women’s Health Blog comes the discussion of Sunburn and our children. Did you know that we can help to prevent skin cancer for today’s kids? Talk to your day care center, your children’s camp, outdoor and recreation programs. Make sure that they are Sun Saviey. Want more info? http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/skin/pdf/sunsafety_v0908.pdf
  2. When your kids are with you, these 5 tips can help to protect their skin
    1. minimize exposure to the sun between 10 am and 4 pm.
    2. Seek shade,
    3. cover up. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV protective sunglasses and tightly woven, loose-fitting clothing that protects the skin,
    4. Apply sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or more (read the label!!) and
    5. be a good role model for your children, and others in the community.

Slowing down the appearance of wrinkles, and who doesn’t want that? Then, we need to support a protein under the skin, called collagen. It’s part of the structure under our skin and as we age, the skin’s ability to replace damaged collagen diminishes! This leaves us with the appearance of WRINKLES!

  1. Did you know that Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis? And its potent antioxidant activity helps reduce skin damage!

OK ladies, from the NHANES study, they found that women who consumed higher dietary intakes of vitamin C were less likely to have a wrinkled appearance! Foods high in C include: oranges, orange juice, potatoes, strawberries and sweet red bell peppers.

  1. Carrots helping with UV Protection? Eating fruits and vegetables (especially plants with red and yellow pigments) can provide us with lots of carotenoids (a good thing!).  AND these carotenoids are also known for improving skin hydration by 38%, skin elasticity by 8%, as demonstrated in a 12 week study.  Wow!
  2. Inflammation! They ae finding that omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids are helping to prevent inflammation! Having some skin issues? Try increasing your Omega’s! Want to know what we use at our home? Click here.

Summer Time Tips:

  1. Eat a healthy well balanced diet– whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetable, protein, nuts, seeds and plant oils.
  2. Make sure you are getting adequate amounts of vitamin C, carotenoids and essential fatty acids. Best place to get these nutrients is in your food. Not sure if you are? Supplement your diet.
  3. Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated! Did you know that water helps carry nutrients and oxygen to all your cells? Including your skin cells? And it transports toxins and wastes out of your body. How do you know if you’re drinking enough? Your body will tell you – look at the color of your urine. Is it dark colored, not yellow but almost brown? Does it have a strong order? You may need more water! Is it a pale yellow? Is there almost no order? Sounds like your are keeping your body hydrated. And remember, if your activity changes, your fluid needs may change also!
  4. Sunscreen! Lather it on before you are exposed! Look for one that is UVA and UVB, with an SPF of at least 15!
  5. Seek the shade and wear protective clothing.
  6. Get enough vitamin D. The body makes vitamin D when the skin is exposed to the sun. However, sunscreen use blocks the process! It’s estimated that 50% of adults in the US are at risk for vitamin D deficiency! Take a multivitamin-multi-mineral supplement daily with plenty of vitamin D.
